West and North West Leeds

 Area background

This area of the city, compared to the others, is perceived to be an area that is relatively affluent. It does not have high levels of concentrated deprivation. It does however have many "pockets" of deprivation.

The area has five communities that fall within the 5% most deprived areas nationally, two of which are only half a mile from the prosperous and vibrant city centre. Thirty one separate communities in Leeds fall within the 20% most deprived communities nationally. The areas around New Wortley, Armley, Bramley and Little London have some of the lowest skills levels in the city, high crime rates and poor environments, all of which have an effect on general health and life expectancy.

The area has five inner city high schools that face particular challenges in engaging young people in learning. All five schools have attainment levels below both the Leeds and national averages for achievement.

Armley, Bramley and Pudsey have town centres which are the heart of their communities and play an important role in supporting the area. It is essential that these town centres do not go into further decline and collectively we work to support their renaissance.

West Leeds has a strong  ‘Arts' fraternity which boasts the annual ‘I Love West Leeds Festival' - a week of  art and music related events mostly organised and delivered by committed volunteers and supported by Interplay.
