BUSINESSES URGED TO JOIN CLIMATE CHANGE DEBATE
Sustainable UK Cities Tour culminates in Leeds on 1st December
Leeds City Council is partnering with the UK Business Council for Sustainable Energy (UKBCSE) and Shell UK to hold a climate change debate on Monday 1st December. Businesses are urged to come along to identify how the public and private sector might create fruitful partnerships towards a low carbon future.
The event in Leeds marks the culmination of a year-long series of events nation-wide: the Sustainable UK Cities Tour, which has been visiting seven key cities over the course of 2008. The insights from Leeds and other cities along the way will be taken to national policy-makers in 2009 to help shape national thinking on the role cities can play in tackling climate change.
The event in Leeds will examine how partnership working might turn the challenge of climate change into lucrative opportunities. For example:
•· Green Council procurement that creates competitive advantages for applicable local suppliers;
•· Localised energy infrastructures, generating cost effective energy for industry with the potential to sell excess back to the grid; and
•· Local government support for industry in developing sustainable energy projects.
Leeds City Council will also talk about the launch of its Leeds Climate Charter, which allows organisations to commit to any of five actions to start reaping the business benefits of improved environmental management.
There will be keynote speeches from Council Steve Smith, Leeds City Council, and James Smith, Chairman of Shell UK. An interactive panel discussion will be chaired by Chris Murray, Director of the Core Cities Programme.
Councillor Steve Smith, Executive Member for Environmental Services, said:
"Leeds City Council is committed to the climate change agenda, and would urge businesses in Leeds to join us at this event. By working in partnership with the business community we aim to create a low carbon city with a high quality of life."
James Smith, Chairman of Shell UK, said: "Shell's scenario planning suggests innovation will be vital in a world needing a wide mix of energy sources and energy saving technologies. Cities like Leeds can bring significant change in the energy system, both as major places of energy use and places where innovation thrives."[1]
The event in Leeds is taking place from 2:30pm on Monday 1st December at The Park Plaza Hotel, Boar Lane City Square, Leeds. Registration is free but places are limited, so if you wish to join the debate please call Nicola Fisher on 020 7924 4244.
